We’re approaching that time of the year when pool covers come off, electric grills get fired up, and portable fans come out of the attic. Spring and summertime increase the demand for electricity and introduce some warm weather electrical hazards that can be especially dangerous to your furry family members. Here are some tips to help keep your pet safe during the warm seasons.
Keep wires away from pets
Pets are naturally curious creatures and will put just about anything into their mouths. With all the extra seasonal appliances you may have plugged in, it’s important to keep those cords and wires out of your pet’s reach so they don’t chew on them. To help mitigate any risks, cover the cord with a plastic sleeve or spray it with a behavior correction spray you can pick up at your local pet store.

Unplug cords when not in use—including phone chargers
If you aren’t using a device, unplug the cords, especially where wall outlets are lower to the floor or ground and in the eyesight of your pet. Dogs or cats at play can easily pull the cord from the outlets and stick their tongues or noses in the sockets and get a jolt. Or they can chew the cords and get a serious shock of pain. We also recommend not just unplugging electronic devices but moving them to an elevated surface out of your pet’s reach.
Never leave portable heaters or fans unattended
Rambunctious puppies and frisky kitties are always knocking things over. That’s why you never want to leave a portable heater or fan unattended with your pet on the scene. If they knock over a heater, they could get seriously burned. And if a box fan gets turned over, restricting the motor, it could overheat and potentially start a fire.

Don’t leave electronic devices near water
It will soon be pool season and that means spending time outdoors by the water with smartphones, speakers, and other electronic devices and appliances plugged in. As you know, electricity and water don’t mix, so avoid putting any electrical devices near water where a playful pup could get shocked or could knock the devices in the water, shocking swimmers.
Being aware of the potential risks that electricity can pose to your pets can help you have a safer, more enjoyable spring and summer season.
